چکیده

Abstract With climate change, streams and rivers are at increased risk of droughts flow intermittency. The full implications these conditions for fluvial carbon (C) processing stream-atmosphere CO 2 emissions not well understood. We performed a controlled drought experiment in outdoor hyporheic flumes. simulated small rain events that increase sediment moisture content, but do cause streamflow order to investigate how affect streambed dissolved organic C dynamics, biofilm respiration enzyme activity, bacterial community composition. Flumes were subject non-flow phase one month with varying frequency (weekly, 3 × weekly, no rain). Sediment was sampled the surface from zone end phase. quantified microbial dry sediments DOC leaching after resumption. found that, surface, more frequent significantly 12.6 ± 0.25 µg g −1 DW h 26.5 11.3 between control weekly events. average amount leached during resumption reduced by 0.813 0.62 mg L More also resulted fresher DOM tryptophan fluorescence higher BIX. This, along glucosidase activity biofilms, indicates OC period Small enhanced Shannon diversity communities, stronger presence ‘terrestrial-like’ clades. propose drought, even those size, highly relevant Future research should explicitly consider when investigating fluxes intermittent fully understand systems change. conclude impact dynamics reflow likely cascading downstream river network.

Dissolved organic carbon support of respiration in the dark ocean.

Recent evidence that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a significant component of the organic carbon flux below the photic layer of the ocean (1), together with verification of high respiration rates in the dark ocean (2), suggests that the downward flux of DOC may play a major role in supporting respiration there. Here we show, on the basis of examination of the relation between DOC and appare...

Dissolved organic carbon in sediments from the eastern North Atlantic

Profiles of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in the pore water of sediments from 1000, 2000 and 3500 m water depth in the eastern North Atlantic. A net DOC accumulation in the pore waters was observed, which followed closely the zonation of microbial respiration in these sediments. The concentration of pore water DOC in the zone of oxic respiration was elevated relative to that in t...

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from California continental margin sediments

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from marine sediments represent a poorly constrained component of the oceanic carbon cycle that may affect the concentration and composition of DOC in the ocean. Here we report the first in situ measurements of DOC fluxes from continental margin sediments (water depths ranging from 95 to 3,700 m), and compare these fluxes with measured benthic fluxes fro...

Photochemical production of dissolved organic carbon from resuspended sediments

A series of controlled photolysis experiments using simulated sunlight was conducted in the presence and absence of estuarine bottom sediments to address the role of sediment resuspension on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) cycling in estuarine and coastal waters. In 0.2-mm-filtered estuarine water samples with no added sediment, DOC concentrations decreased from 0.4 to 3 mmol L21 h21 as a result...

Changes in the character of stream water dissolved organic carbon during flushing in three small watersheds, Oregon

[1] The hydrologic and biogeochemical responses of forested watersheds to inputs of rainfall and snowmelt can be an indicator of internal watershed function. In this study, we assess how the quantity and quality, both chemical and spectroscopic, of stream water DOC changes in response to a 6-day storm event during the wet season of 2003 in three small (<1 km) basins in the H. J. Andrews Experim...
